Kenneth Tharp. Independent Dancer, Choreographer, Teacher and co-director of Artyfartyarts.

After starting classical ballet at a young age, with Catherine Marks in Glasgow, and then in Cambridge with the Russian ballet teacher Nina Hubbard, he completed his professional training at the London Contemporary Dance School. He apprenticed with London Contemporary Dance Theatre in 1981 and went on to dance with Janet Smith & Dancers before rejoining LCDT full-time in 1982. Whilst with LCDT he created many roles including The Smouldering Suit and the part of 'Death' in Kim Brandstrup's award winning Orfeo. He worked with many distinguished choreographers including: Robert Cohan, Siobhan Davies, Dan Wagoner, Richard Alston, Robert North, Bill T. Jones, Christopher Bruce, Mark Morris, and Amanda Miller. He danced with the company until its closure in 1994, including the last London season at Sadlers Wells, for which the dancers received the Laurence Olivier Award for the most Outstanding Achievement in Dance. In 1987 Kenneth gained a first class BA Honours Degree in Contemporary Dance, awarded by the University of Kent. As a freelance performer he has been a member of Arc Dance Company, creating original roles in Saints and Shadows and Crime Fictions, and the role of 'The Devil' in The Return of Don Juan as well as dancing the title role in Othello, a part originally created for the Royal Ballet dancer Irek Mukhamedov. Other performance work has included The Dancing Room, with Kate Flatt and Sally Jacobs, the role of Tristan in Tristan and Isolda, a full length modern dance, in which he appeared as guest soloist with the State Opera & Ballet, in Maribor, Slovenia, Heroine, with the Charnock Company, and Gourmet, with the Claire Russ Ensemble, and with Protein Dance

As a teacher he has taught at many of the leading vocational schools, at summer schools both here and abroad, and has taught for companies such as AMP and the Birmingham Royal Ballet, as well as leading open professional classes. He has been Artistic Director of the Sadler's Wells Youth Dance Company since Sept 1994. He has also acted as Education Co-ordinator for Arc Dance Company. As a choreographer he is Co-director of Artfartyarts with composer Simon Redfern. Most recent works include Tickets, (1999) Three Short Dances (1999), Starlings Kissing (1999) and Pack (1999). He also choreographed Heroes Don't Dance, (1998) a large scale community opera staged in Cambridge for the Royal Opera House Education and Songs and Dances from The Tempest, (1998) set for Javanese Gamelan by Alec Roth, and performed at the Albert Hall in August 1998 as part of the BBC Proms. As a longer term goal he is currently developing a new large scale work -Jam Karet (Rubber-time), - for 10 dancers, mixed-media and live Balinese gamelan - in collaboration with Simon Redfern. This work forms part of a larger vision for a series of works that relate in different ways to the theme of 'Time', called The Time-pieces. Alongside his own choreography, Kenneth has been involved in many collaborative projects: he has been on the tutorial team for the last six Opera and Music Theatre Labs. He has twice been a tutor on Share Music - a course for participants with physical disability or sensory impairment - working alongside composers Nigel Osborne and Richard Stilgoe. He was assistant director to composer Philip Flood on the 1996 Composers and Choreographers Exchange, and directed the 1998 Exchange with composer Christopher Best. He is also an accomplished musician who has performed regularly with the South Bank New Music Gamelan, as well as accompanying dance classes. He has written several pieces for gamelan. In 1996, Kenneth received a Lisa Ullmann Travel Scholarship which enabled him to travel to Indonesia to further his research and study of gamelan along with Indonesian dance and culture. During his five week stay he also undertook an intensive teaching programme on behalf of the British Council which took him to five different academies, in Bali, Java and West Sumatra, where traditional dance and music are studied. "My time spent in Indonesia gave me a unique opportunity to have an interactive relationship with dancers and musicians from another culture; to broaden and deepen my understanding of both disciplines in a culture where the two are almost completely indivisible." Since this trip Kenneth has choreographed three large scale works involving dance and gamelan.(not including Jam Karet).

TV and film credits include : Rite Electric, Nympheas, and Mass for Man with LCDT, The Dancing Room for BBC2, several pop videos for Prefab Sprout in which he danced and choreographed, the film Angels and Insects, and playing the part of 'Howard' in Alive and Kicking,(1997) an original screenplay by Martin Sherman, directed by Nancy Meckler and starring Jason Flemyng, Anthony Sher, Dorothy Tutin and Bill Nighy. He is still developing his role as a director. In April 1998 he co-directed with writer Eva Salzman - Hard Cell at the Old Operating Theatre, Performed by the company Prison Works, it was a collaboration between writers, singers, actors and composers. In August 1999 he directed One Two, (a work in progress) at ENO studios, a short opera collaboration between composer Gary Carpenter and writer Eva Salzman. Kenneth has also been employed in the role of mentor to other artists on a number occasions. He has previously been on the board of Jazz Exchange as well as being a member of The Royal Ballet Advisory Board. He is currently on the Executive Committee of Dance UK, and contributes in particular to the work of the Healthier Dancer Programme. In July 1999 he was one of eight choreographers participating in the International Course for Professional Choreographers and Composers at Bretton Hall, Yorkshire. Most recently he participated in a Dance for Camera course in Brighton, directed by Miranda Pennell and in the Dance on Screen Masterclass at The Place, directed by Laura Taler. He is currently teaching at the Millennium 2000 Dance School in London and is Dancer in Residence at Queens' College Cambridge. Artyfartyarts performed two new works as part of the Resolution season at The Place in February 2000.
